Märsta Urban Centre, Stockholm, Sweden

Märsta urban centre alias Märsta centrum, in Märsta, Sigtuna municipality, north of Stockholm, has been revitalized with completion and official opening of a brand new shopping complex on March 30, 2017. The new shopping complex has attracted top brand stores to the urban centre, including: H&M, Kapp Ahl, Intersport, Dressman, Lindex, ICA Quantum, etc, that now join Willy's that existed hitherto the erection of the complex.

The new shopping complex is located such that it seals the hitherto unbounded side of the main square of the urban centre. As a result, the square is now bounded with urban solids in all sides, with five entry points to walkways that link it with rest of Märsta settlement.

Overall, Märsta urban centre is a mixed commercial/residential centre. The mixed land uses have facilitated liveabilty of the centre, resulting in urban spaces with high levels of utilization even on weekends and evenings. That is further buttressed by apartment blocks within close proximity of the centre. If the existing Märsta commuter train station could be relocated southwards so that it is adjacent to the centre, followed by optimization of residential use on the eastern side of the new station, that could revitalize the urban centre even further!

The redevelopment of Märsta urban centre, may have some regional economic ambitions by Sigtuna municipality, as Märsta is the last largest urban settlement in Stockholm region before Sweden's largest international airport, Arlanda. With a thriving urban centre that may in the future consist of even some world class hotels, Märsta may become a great attraction for transit passengers using Arlanda. Currently, Märsta has very good collective bus link with the airport, that is popular with travellers to and from Arlanda. Travellers to Arlanda will take the commuter train from Stockholm and elsewhere to Märsta commuter train station before transferring to a bus, while those from Arlanda will take the bus to Mästa where transfer to a commuter train at the station. If Märsta commuter train station would be relocated adjacent to the urban centre as suggested earlier, some travellers to and from Arlanda may be tempted to spend some time exploring the centre!
